September 14-18, 2026

Our learning this week:

  • We learned about the letters 'o', 'm', 'n', and 'k'. We practiced saying their sounds correctly, printing them correctly, and reading them in decodable words.
  • We learned about our emotions and how to regulate our emotions. We read a story called "I am Happy-Sad Today", which is about having mixed up emotions. For example, we can be happy to see our parents, but sad to leave our friends. We did writing about how we feel sometimes. 
  • We focused a lot on the word belonging. Belonging means that we feel like we are a part of a group of people! This can be our family, a sports team, and our classroom! We found out about a lonely stuffy that needed help to feel included – we wrote about different ways we can make them feel included!
  • We learned about Terry Fox and how he never gave up, even though things got really hard and tough. We did our best during our Terry Fox run and really enjoyed running with our new buddy class in grade 4!
  • We had our library orientation with Mrs. Barrowcliff. Our class library days will be every Tuesday. It is important to keep track of the books that you borrow. Please remember to return them in our library bags to keep them safe in your child's backpack!

September 24 from 5:00 – 7:00 – Welcome to the New Year Open House (No sign up is required for this. More information will be sent next week.)

September 29 – Orange Shirt Day

September 30 – NO SCHOOL – National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

THURSDAY IS OUR ‘WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR’ / MEET THE TEACHER OPEN HOUSE  

Meet the Teacher, Meet the Teacher Night, School Conference, Parent Teacher

Please join us on Thursday, September 25 sometime between 5:00 - 7:00 to drop in during our ‘Welcome to the New Year’ Open House.    

Although we will have a 2-hour window of time available for families to come in, approximately 15-minutes per child is all that is needed. (You do not need to sign up for a specific time to come, just drop in at a time that works for your family.)   

This drop-in evening will give you a chance to:  

  • take a walk through the school to see the fantastic documentation panels that classes have created outside of our classrooms 
  • see the inside of your child's classroom  
  • say hello to your child's homeroom teacher  
  • see a few things that your child will share about classroom routines, structures and activities  
  • meet / visit with other families outside on the playground / courtyard area
  • visit the food trucks that our School Council has arranged and meet some of the parents that volunteer as part of the council 

**Please note, this Open House evening is not intended as a time for teachers to sit down to discuss how each child is doing, as school will only been in school for a few weeks and teachers are still getting to know their students**  

NLS SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE

Welcome back, families! We hope everyone has had a great start to the school year. We are excited to get Our School Council started and are looking forward to another great year at our school.

What is School Council?
School Council is a great way for parents and guardians to be involved in what is happening at the school, share ideas, support school activities and events, and help build our school community. You don’t have to come to every meeting or volunteer for everything — everyone is welcome!

We’ll share a little more about School Council and how you can get involved in next week’s Northern Lights News update.

A few dates to keep in mind:

September 24 – Meet the Teacher Open House (5:00-7:00)
School Council Executive parents will be there to say hello and meet families. We will also have food trucks on site, so come grab some dinner and say hi!

September 29 at 7:00 p.m. – First School Council meeting of the year
We’d love to see you there! Come meet other parents, hear what’s happening at the school, share your ideas, and find out what School Council is all about.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone and getting the year started!
