December 15-19, 2025

Our learning this week:

  • We learned about the /wh/ digraph. This is a tricky digraph because it sounds just like /w/. We learned that /wh/ is often how we spell our question words like: what, where, when, and why.
  • We also began learning about King Ed. This is when there is a silent e at the end of words, such as cake, bike, cone, and it make the "vowel sound say its name".
  • We read "Snow Globe Wishes" and thought about how sometimes wishes aren't items but things we would love to happen. We drew our wishes in our snowglobes and wrote what we wish for on the back.
  • We worked on an art project with our burrowing animals that we drew! We read "Over and Under the Snow" and talked about how some animals stay active over the winter time. Our art turned out nice!
  • We continued with our holiday centres and practicing our math skills.
  • We also spent time outside with Mother Nature and enjoyed a sit spot. This was to celebrate winter solstice. We played in the snow afterwards!
I hope that you all have a wonderful holiday break! I look forward to seeing everyone again in January!

BEATING THE WINTER BLUES

Winter Scene, Snow, Winter, Tree, Blue Sky

Long winters can be difficult on our mental health and can contribute to feelings of sadness or loneliness. The good thing is, there are ways to beat the ‘winter blues’. Please see below for a few tips:

Stay active: 30-minutes of exercise helps release endorphins, which have a positive effect on you mind and body.

Focus on healthy eating and good hydration: Drinking lots of water and eating nutrient rich foods helps your brain stay hydrated and your body stay energized.

Enjoy the sunshine: In Calgary, we are lucky to still have a lot of sunshine during the winter months and natural light can help you feel better by helping your body produce Vitamin D.

Get enough sleep: Sleep is critical in having enough energy to get through the day and assists in being able to wake up more easily.

Engage in social activities: Social connections can help you feel more energized.

Express gratitude: Reflecting on what you are grateful for and completing random acts of kindness can help replace negative thoughts with a positive mindset.
