November 13-14, 2025

Winter is here! It is extremely important that your child is dressed well and properly for each day at school. Every day, students go outside for two recess times. On Friday, students go outside for longer periods of time to participate in Field Study Fridays. We do these activities in any weather! I firmly believe that in Calgary there is no bad weather and it matters what we wear to help us stay warm.

The only times when students will not go outside due to weather is when it is colder than -18°C, with the wind chill. On these days, students will be kept inside as it is a "Blue Day".

It is also extremely helpful to foster independence for your child in getting dressed for winter on their own. This includes following logical steps to get dressed, such as getting your jacket zipped up before you put on your mittens. It is difficult as the only adult in our classroom to help each child get dressed on time.

We learned about two new spellings for phonics this week. We learned about the FLSZ rule; this rule is followed when we spell one-syllable words that end in F, L, S, or Z. When it follows a short vowel, we double that letter!

We also learned about the ending /k/ sound. When we hear that sound at the end of words and there is a short vowel right before it, we spell the /k/ sound with a 'ck'.

Our heart word that we practiced this week was the word "was". This is a heart word because the 's' makes a /z/ sound!

We continued learning about Fat Bear Week and made predictions about which bear we thought was the biggest and could survive hibernation over the winter! Here are some of our predicitions!

We also began learning about Canada Geese. We learned about migration and why they fly in a v-formation! It was so cool when we got to see them flying outside during our Field Study time today!

We spent time outside for Field Study Friday today! We observed signs of winter and looked for objects in the snow.

LANGUAGE INTERPRETATION SERVICES

We help students and families from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.  We help you get to know our schools and our system, and to feel at home with us.

You can request an interpreter to help you communicate effectively in a Parent/Teacher Conference or any other meeting with a teacher or CBE staff if you are a parent or guardian. Having an interpreter at a meeting will improve everyone’s understanding of the discussion. There is no cost to families for language interpretation services.
