September 8-12, 2025
- We read "Labeling our World" and learned how to label things. We practiced labeling our classroom with sticky notes and tried our best to spell the sounds we heard in the words!
- We continued working on patterns. In grade one, we need to know four element patterns. Those are patterns that follow the ABCD rule. We will start practicing extending patterns and exploring missing patterns.
- In Science, we began learning about wonders. This will guide us through our science investigations as we inquire about the world around us. Ask your child what wonder they were thinking about!
- We practiced guided drawing this week and learning how to follow details and instructions! We created a snowman made of sand on the beach and learned how to label it.
- This week, we also had a full moon. As a part of our Indigenous commitment to learning, we will be learning about the moons through an Indigenous lens. We learned the Cree name for things and why they follow the moon cycles. If you want to learn with us, you can take a look at this video!

SAFETY FIRST…not Convenience
Do not let your child out or let them in in the middle of the road or in the middle of the Hug & Go before pulling over to a sidewalk curb. It is not safe. Today, we almost had a child crushed between two cars due to them getting out and running between cars. Safety MUST come before convenience.
At the end of the day, DO NOT get out of your car in the Hug & Go. This is NOT a parking lot.
Additionally, do NOT use the staff parking lot for drop off or pick up. Parents should not be pulling into the staff parking lot ever.
Terry Fox Event at Northern Lights School
Each September, students at Northern Lights School will join thousands of schools worldwide in the annual Terry Fox Event. In preparation for the event, students reflect on topics such as Terry Fox’s legacy, meeting challenges, empathy, and setting personal goals. You may wish to support your child’s learning about Terry Fox through discussion at home. Further information can be found at https://terryfox.org/.
This year the Northern Lights School community is challenged to meet the goal set by our students of raising $1500.00 and running or walking 1500 km!
On Thursday, September 18, students will run around a designated course on the field beside the school. In case of inclement weather, the run will take place indoors during regularly scheduled Phys. Ed. classes.
Students and families are invited to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation in the following ways: by contributing cash or cheques, made payable to The Terry Fox Foundation, to classroom collection boxes; or online. Online donations may be made at: https://schools.terryfox.ca/98133. Tax receipts will be issued by the Terry Fox Foundation for donations over $20.00. All monies raised through our event will be forwarded to the Foundation to further the cause of cancer research. The deadline for donation is Friday, September 19.
Let’s help Northern Lights School keep Terry’s dream of finding a cure for cancer alive.
Thank you!
The Northern Lights School Terry Fox Committee
NO PARKING IN THE HUG & GO LOOP OR STAFF PARKING LOT
There is NO parking or leaving your vehicle for any reason in the Hug & Go loop or in front of the school in the bus zones in the morning between 8:56 – 9:15 or from 3:30 – 4:00. The Hug & Go loop is exactly that…a place to hug your child and have them go to the playground without you so you can drive away promptly. If you wish to walk your child onto the playground, please park on the street in a legal area.
After school, you also cannot double park in the loop or leave your vehicle. Parents truly need to work together to follow the expectations for everyone to get where they need to be in a timely manner.
There is also NO parking or NO dropping off students in the staff parking lot. Parents are NOT to enter the staff parking lot at all please. Two of our students were almost hit as they were running through the parking lot to get in their parents’ cars. We also ask that you do not block our neighbours’ garage entrances or driveways ever. We appreciate your patience, respect, care and cooperation.
USING THE CITY PATH ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE SCHOOL
Please do not walk across the driveway in front of the Hug & Go. Please use the path to the West or the sidewalk that runs beside the school on the East. Crossing in front of the Hug & Go entrance is dangerous but also backs up the traffic and causes drop off / pick up issues.
ARRIVING ON TIME AND ENTERING AT THE ASSIGNED DOORS AT 9:09 - 9:11 AM
When arriving at school prior to the start of the day, children need to go to the back of the school and onto the playground to their designated doors. All classes enter at the back and all students need to go in with the other students. Please ensure your child arrives onto the playground between 8:56-9:09 am so they are not late. We have teachers on supervision from 8:56 – 9:11 to accommodate early arrivals. (Arriving prior to 9:05 also helps to alleviate the traffic flowing through the Hug & Go.)
IMPORTANT ACTION: ‘TO DO’ LIST FOR PARENTS / GUARDIANS
If you haven’t already, please log into your MyCBE account and fill in the following forms:
- Demographic Verification Form: Even if you have had NO changes to phone numbers, emails, etc., this form MUST be submitted so the school has confirmation of the most recent contact info in case of an emergency
- Annual Authorization: Teachers post pictures to their agenda blogs on a regular basis. Your Consent for CBE Use of Student Information form must be completed if your child wants to be included.
- Lunchroom Supervision: ALL students staying for lunch MUST have the Lunch Supervision form completed. It is now available to be filled in within your MyCBE account. Once registered, the CBE will process the form and the fees will be loaded at a later date. (You will not see an added fee immediately when you register.)
ANNUAL VOLUNTEER FORMS ARE AVAILABLE IN YOUR MYCBE ACCOUNT
If you log into your MyCBE account, you can also now complete your Annual Volunteer Registration form. This has to be completed each school year if you plan to volunteer. You will need to upload a photo of yourself holding your ID by your face. See the cartoon picture within the form for an example.
MEDICATION TAKEN AT SCHOOL
If your child has any medications that must be administered / stored at school, any medical needs, or any severe allergies, we require you to fill in the Student Health Plan and return it to the school, either in paper form or electronically to northernlights@cbe.ab.ca. If the Student Health Emergency Response Protocol also applies to your child, please send the forms in with the medications as soon as possible.
